The polymer tip of high BC bullets is prone to melting in flight. Hornady engineers found that the conventional polymer tip material in high BC bullets with a streamlined design melted and deformed. Aerodynamic heating can cause BC loss and accuracy degradation, even though it is not an issue for moderate BC conventionally tipped hunting and varmint bullets. Hornady developed the Heat Shield tip, a polymer that is heat resistant to counteract this effect. This new tip is a revolutionary innovation that creates the perfect tip (meplat) and delivers consistent results, from one bullet to another. Heat Shield tip resists aerodynamic heating, and maintains its shape for a meplat that is consistently the same. The combination of a streamlined secant ogive, AMP bullet jackets with optimum boattail, and the patent-pending Heat Shield tips create a high BC match ball with supreme accuracy. The BCs of ELD-Match match bullets are measured using Doppler radar, and then corrected for standard atmospheric conditions.
