6.5 Creedmoor Ammo: History, Performance & Uses

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a centerfire rifle cartridge developed specifically for long-range precision and competitive target shooting. It was created by Dave Emary of Hornady and Dennis DeMille of Creedmoor Sports, and officially introduced in 2007.

Engineered to deliver exceptional accuracy, the 6.5 Creedmoor operates at pressures similar to the .308 Winchester while firing a smaller-diameter, high-ballistic-coefficient bullet at higher velocities. This combination produces a flatter trajectory, reduced wind drift, and long-range performance that rivals some .300 Winchester Magnum loads—without the heavy recoil associated with magnum cartridges.

The cartridge features a medium-length case design that functions reliably in a wide range of firearms, including bolt-action rifles and AR-10 platform rifles. Using a large rifle primer, the 6.5 Creedmoor has become one of the most popular calibers for precision shooting, long-range competition, and hunting medium-sized game
